    Default FIRE PICS

the fire most recently in franklin square...and other fires around the island are covered by a network of Fire Photographers...most of them take great pics and really capture the scene well...their pics assist in critiques and warstories...that being said...why... even after "firealarm" do members of nassau's fire service and friends of nassau's fire service publish their work in Newsday...i know newsday pays and for some it is a livelihood but there is still dailynews...ny post...heralds...tribunes...firenews...
    1st responder...just curious...any thoughts?...am i being unreasonable?

You spend between 700 and 1500 on a decent digital camera to take fire pics, it only makes sense you sell a few to the papers to get a few bucks back on your investment. And you get your name under the pic.

i think tl254 means to not sell them to newsday so newsday looks bad that they have no pictures of the fires in nassau.

Positive press that identifies who, what, where, when and how we do what we do is good for the FS regardless of what general news outlet it comes from. The FS must take advantage of positive images at every opportunity. Hey, you know the negatives will always follow whether legit or not -- regardless of facts. This is applicable to the press in all locals whether your in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, NYC, Detroit, LA, Chicago, West Bum F*$k, etc.

Remember, if they don't get the story from you, they'll get it elsewhere and usually from the most uniformed, ignorant, -- dopiest MF they can find. Give-em what they want, in a professional manner under your terms in your carefully selected words. Ignoring them will only hurt you and will not stop them from getting their story . one-way or the other.

i'm not suggesting not supplying pics...but just not to newsday...they have shown an inability to use tact and discetion and oo yea FACTS...they may use our pics for their own purpose...thats all i'm sayin...people would wonder why somthing happened and newsday had no coverage...they are too slanted to be trusted...

    Default Fire Pics

MANY MANY years ago, i used to take photos and sell them. While N.Y. Newsday was my primary buyer, i also sold to NY Post NY Daily News, AP and LI Herlad. The problem with not selling to Newsday is this, if another major paper buys your pictures great,,,,if not you are stuck with LI Herald,, which doesn't pay half as much as newsday.... I dunno what they r paying now, but in the early late 80's early 90's they would give you 150-300 for a front page,, and 75 for an inside shot. They were also very good about replacing film used.... and giving you extra copies of photos if you asked for them.

The other issue is that there is not such a big market for L.I. fire photos in NY Daily or NY Post unless it is a fatal or very significant fire.

like someone else said beggars cant be chosers...

i recently stumbled on to ''south shore long island fire pictures '' on e-bay there was like 7 different lots of mostly long beach with some lynbrook & hewlett and Valley stream . the guy was from i think ohio and wasn't sure how he came upon them . they were mostly color from the early 80's.

why... even after "firealarm" do members of nassau's fire service and friends of nassau's fire service publish their work in Newsday
    1. Money.
    2. Wanting to see their nane in the newspaper.

Look at who is submitting the pictures and see if they are indeed firefighters or if they are freelance photographers that pass themselves off as friends of the fire service?

Then remember who they are at your next incident and act accordingly.

Photographers should sell to all the newspapers. Sell to the highest bidders and make as good a living as they can, even if it is just a supplemental income.
Here is what I do to fulfill my part...I HAVEN'T PURCHASED A NEWSDAY IN OVER A YEAR! I rufuse to buy newsday. Sure, I'll read someone elses but thay're not gettin' any quarters from me. If something newsworthy is printed in their rag, I'll read it on-line FOR FREE!
Imagine if every firefighter thought like I do on this subject. ohhhhh the possabilities...........

how do you obtain a press pass or the ability to take pictures at a scene and not get kicked out and use a flashing light to get to a scene faster? ive seen it done before. what makes them different than someone like a freelance photographer or a buff like me taking pics?

    for newsday its basiclly this:

who has bad pictures so we can tear up the fire departments?
    and
    Who is selling them cheap?
Its amazing how a band-aid can cure everything.

You light it, ill fight it.
