    Default Magnetic Door Lock F.E.

I came across an apartment service door today (not with the fd that is...) With a magnetic lock and an electronic key-swipe pad. I would imagine that such doors would be extremely difficult to force given the power of magnetism. (Im guessing it would be pretty strong on a security door).

Does anyone come across them often? Is there any special techniques/tools involved for forcing doors with these locks? Are they infact stronger than the average door locks out there?

    Thanks for any info

if the magnet is at the top of the door try going down low. if you use a rabbit tool (or similar) the force should break the hold. or like mentioned below, throw a little weight into the door.

also if you kill the power the door should open freely.

Apply a little pressure to the door then strike the portion of the door where the magnet is attached with a maul. This may "pop" the door

If you have a handle that you can slide a tool through you can use this method:
Slide the halligan through with the adz and pike end overlapping the door jamb.
Take the hydra ram and put it between the jamb and the flat part of the halligan near the adz and pump until the door pops open.
    Maintain control of the door(open)

It's funny I was talking about this very same topic with someone the other day and learned the following. First, try before you pry. Sometimes these doors are broken and haven't been repaired. Second, it's basically along the same lines of what has already been mentioned, bring a mal and give the door a good hard hit. This disturbs the magnetic hold long enough to open the door. Another method mentioned was just talk to any of the kids from that or around that building, these kids are really smart and figure these things out.

some doors have push buttons to deactivate the magnet to leave the building, so with out breaking anything get a long piece of metal that you can shape and has some mass (like a thick hanger) and try to reach the button and press it (more for an emergancy not a fire)
also if you can look up and see if there is a motion detector on the inside of the door you can use the slim jim by sliding it through the door and waving it back and forth to simulate motion and the door will open.

The best thing about these doors is that typically the "throw" is very small & weak. Go straight for that. You can go for the hinges too, but gonna take ya longer. Try it out next time you go the ATM, 9 outta 10 of the "magnetic locked" doors you can rattle like crazy.

I have yet to see an magnetized dead bolt-type set up yet, although I'm sure its coming.

Also, one of my favorite tips from the RANT here, if it is a bank, use your spare/expired gift card/ATM card on ring of elevator keys on the rig first, no damage whatsoever

Several of these ideas are very good!!! The use of the haligan between the handle and using the hydra ram to pry open the door is usually the most reliable move on these doors!!! yes at atm/banks etc the expired credit card etc. is a heads up move!! At a residence/apt./housing project i always hit a bunch of the buzzers/doorbells etc. usually someone will buzz the fd in. Sometimes i even knock on first floor windows to have someone buzz me in...and yes you can even ask the crowd in the courtyard to use their key to let you in...or use their personal tricks to get you in...in some buildings dirt etc has weathered the magnetic conections...or someone has already "rigged" the door with a sticker covering the magnets or shimmed some paper in the door so it can be pulled forcefully and open up without much force or the use of tools

In the PJ's In ENY, Housing installed these heavy steel magnetic doors in the stair ways at the ground floor of certain buildings go there for a run and some 10 year old gives the door a good shot in just the right spot and it flys open lol, also saw trick off a kid, they take a bottle cap like a snapple one and smash it flat and stick it on the magnet to deactivate it,..sometimes the door windows are shit plastic cause the glass was broken push in and hit button .also seen where the side windows are kicked out ya can climb right through, watch out with the rabbit tool trick though if it don't look like the original handle it will prob rip right off, ya might have to try forcing it with the adz or fork,

Like mentioned by Johnny and Ladder 42 ... some tactics with BOTH the Halligan and the Hydra-Ram are usually the best bet, for outward opening metal, magnetic entrance doors. Dislodging or disrupting the magnetic force works in theory, but in the field I've seen it work few times and often more time is wasted in trying to dislodge the magnetic connection. The pull created by placing the Halligan against a door handle and then extending the Hydra Ram ... usually does the trick. Almost all Housing Authority main entrance doors have these locks.

I have also seen members pulling the door with brute strength and pop the door. Pretty impressive. "I am the brute squad" -Andre the Giant
