We've been told for some time about a new system, the Dept. and PBA worked together (the PBA is involved because they complained about the current system so much, it's an officer safety issue) I'll believe it when I see it it use.

I was at a meeting last year. They expect it up in 3-4yrs. 99% coverage outside, 97% coverage inside. Depts will get 1 radio for testing, but they will be on the hook for everything else. New consoles will allow depts to be patched into anyone.

    Or so they say.

I dont get it. The city seems to make a mess of everything else they do except for the radio system they have. Why is nassaus system so bad, when ever i hear a ncpd cop talk on his portable, he always has to repeat his message in the car to get through. Where as in the city, no patrol cop has a car radio, everything is done on portables. Can't nassau just put up more repeaters and save a few $,$$$,$$$.

Well dont these new radios have the GPS system?
Thats a two headed coin, but officer safety is the priority.

actually NCPD has very good coverage...even when my scanner has no antenna I still pick them up clear as day...

Except in Laurel Hallow, Locust Valley, Bayville and Oyster bay Cove.
But they do have very good safe coverage by radio and car numbers.
    Well as of now..

Not scrambled, except for selected operations like surveillance, etc.

The comments about NYC are intriguing. It is pretty cool that they operate on HT only citywide. In fact, they only operate their portables on low power to conserve battery life.

Would there actually be a cost savings by putting up more TX and RX like NYC? Let's take a closer look...

Current NCPD system was installed in 1982. Everything needs to be replaced. After that, more equipment would need to be added. How much more to parallel NYC? Well, NYC is 338 square miles. NC is 285 square miles. NYC has denser structures but NC has more foliage and hills. NYC currently uses 128 separate TX sites and over 1,200 separate RX sites. NC has 5 TX sites and 16 RX sites.

To keep this apples-to-apples. Let's compare how many sites are used on a citywide channel vs. a countywide channel.

    NYC...
4 TX (2 usually in Manhattan and 2 in S.I.)
    Over 100 RX

    NC...
    2 TX (1 primary and 1 backup)
    16 RX

To start to match that would cost a lot of money. But! The coverage would be very good. The downside to that investment is that it does not improve capacity! For the tens of millions that it would cost, there is more bang for the buck in building the trunked system that increases coverage and capacity. Also, NYPD is exclusive user of their system. The Nassau system is designed to be multi-agency to accomodate all of public safety.

Other big cities do share the philosophy seen in NYC. Los Angeles PD uses a very large conventional P25 system exclusively. The LAFD uses a conventional 800 system exclusively. The rest of LA city government uses a trunked 800 system. Sound familiar? Only difference is that one city agency maintains all systems in LA, while in NY the PD/FD maintain their own and DOITT does the rest.

The NC system components are shipping. I'd expect partial buildout in 2007 and completion in about 2 yrs.
